Department Details

Sanford Health is currently recruiting a clinical Genetic Counselor to practice in the area of Women's Health, with a primary role in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. We currently have a team of ten genetic counselors who serve the areas of pediatrics, oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, adult genetics, newborn screening, and primary care.

Job Summary

The Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for heredity disorders in the area of Women's Health, with a primary role in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Gathers patient information such as historical records and family health conditions for medical assessment. Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Educates patients and health professionals about genetic disorders; ensures appropriate patient referral and care. Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions.

Ability to operate in clinic and laboratory settings and collaborate between the two. In laboratory settings, the Genetic Counselor reviews literature and translates to reports, reviews family histories to assess particular issues, and interacts with colleagues to coordinate with lab techs and directors on reporting of results. In clinic settings, the Genetic Counselor reviews literature and translates to patients, reviews family histories to assess for genetic risks, and collaborates with physicians and nurses on reporting of patients.

Qualifications

Master of science from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required.

Fulfills expectations for Genetic Counselor as outlined by the ABGC.

Applicable state licensure is required.

Board certification through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) is required upon hire. If candidates are new graduates, documentation of graduation from an accredited program must be provided upon hire; candidates are expected to sit for respective certification within their first year. Full licensure and ordering requirements require board certification.
