Job Summary

Under specific direction, performs technical procedures in the Medical Genetics Laboratory in a manner that ensures accurate and reliable clinical results following Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines. Runs complex pieces of equipment requiring advanced specialized training. May perform specialized testing such as real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Sanger sequencing, and Next Generation sequencing. Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains equipment and lab area. Utilizes knowledge of scientific process and specific clinical laboratory protocols. Possesses the ability to measure, troubleshoot, and prepare clinical results for laboratory director review. Comprehends numeric concepts and performs numeric calculations. Ability to work collaboratively with research and/or clinical group or team. Actively participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures and policies. Assists lab supervisor in accessing competencies, reviewing and signing maintenance logs and ordering lab supplies. Lead laboratory specialists are those individuals who have significant experience in sub-specialty areas within the laboratory and support the laboratory supervisor in day to day operations.

Requires motor skills to utilize various laboratory equipment and perform various procedures. Ability to work occasional irregular hours, including some weekends and rotating holidays. Ability to travel to other laboratory locations as necessary. Participates in the on-call schedule during non-business hours for monitoring and responding to alarms for temperature monitoring. Becomes involved with special projects as necessary.


Bachelor’s degree in a clinical, health, or life science field (biology, chemistry, biochemistry etc).

Minimum of two years’ experience in a clinical laboratory (preferred), or research laboratory. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists is preferred.

Current valid driver’s license, and must meet all medical guidelines for Sanford Health Category III drivers.
