Job Summary

Develops, evaluates and implements new tests, methodologies, or products for the laboratory under the intellectual and scientific guidance of laboratory directors. Assumes responsibility for improvement of existing methods or implementation of new technology of proven validity. Maintains complete and accurate documentation of data generated and work performed. Helps in organizing new method validation data, preparation of data for publication and peer review, and participates in formal presentations.

Participates in the training of laboratory staff, residents and students in principles of methods and applications within the laboratory. Aids in the investigation, installation, evaluation and purchase of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, computer software and hardware, new reagent systems, and other specialty items.

Mentors other clinical staff and scientists when needed in the performance of their duties. May be required to become competent on select clinical assays to fill in at the clinical laboratory bench when needed.

Partners closely with laboratory leadership, clinical operations, bio-informatics and technology solutions. Oversees and leads clinical and research development projects. Provides scientific expertise and clinical strategy to assigned clinical development programs.

Must have demonstrated skills in leadership, communications, problem solving and organization. Must be able to work independently and effectively with a variety of people at all levels both within and outside of Sanford. Must be highly organized, efficient and capable of comprehending complex instructions and situations. Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, function independently and exercise judgment in decision-making.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science with four years of clinical and/or research laboratory experience.

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with six years relative laboratory experience preferred from an accredited institution in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology and two years of relevant laboratory experience.

Extensive molecular test design and development experience, specifically including, but not limited to, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique, quantitative reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays, fragment analysis, next generation sequencing (NGS), Sanger sequencing, and gene expression assays; assay development experience in a clinical lab setting is desirable but not required.

Experience with accreditation agencies, including College of American Pathologists (CAP), etc. is desirable.

Possession of one of the following certifications is desired but not required: national certification for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Molecular Biology (MB), or Specialist in Molecular Biology (SMB) through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP),

If working in North Dakota (ND) with one of the following certifications, must also be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice.

Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications.

May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
